Cloud Providers Evaluating Multi-Vendor Solutions for 400 Gbps Connectivity, According to 650 Group

6/24/2020

ASIC Diversity at the Leaf/Spine and DCI Core Key to 400 Gbps at Apple, AWS, Facebook, Google and Microsoft Azure

PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif.– June 22, 2020 – A newly released report by 650 Group, a leading Market Intelligence Research firm for communications, data center, and cloud markets, indicates that the ASIC segment of the data center switching market is rapidly migrating to 12.8 Tbps and 56 Gbps SERDES based products.  The report also showed significant evaluations occurring at each of the hyperscalers at the ASIC and system level for both Top-of-Rack (Leaf / Spine) L2 ASICs and L3+ ASICs for the Core (DCI, Metro Spine).

“1Q20 recorded record shipments in 400 Gbps and strong 100 Gbps demand in the hysperscalers,” said Alan Weckel, Founder and Technology Analyst at 650 Group.  “ASIC diversity is critical to hyperscalers goal of a diversified supply chain. Historically Cloud providers would pick the same ASIC and have multiply vendors manufacture a switch platform. With current-generation products, hyperscalers are pushing towards additional ASIC diversity.”'

The 650 Group Quarterly Merchant Silicon report also indicates what impact the industry standards bodies efforts on 224 Gbps SERDES and co-packaging on the Ethernet Switch and Router markets.  The report highlights the migration away from 10 Gbps ports to 25 Gbps ports in the enterprise and the Cloud migration towards 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps.

All Time Record for Data Center Ethernet Switch Market, According to 650 Group;  100 Gbps Revenue Finally Surpasses 10 Gbps Revenue

9/17/2018

Portola Valley, California – Sept. 17, 2018 – A newly released market report from the 650 Group indicates that 100 Gbps revenue has exceed 10 Gbps revenue for the first time, as Data Center Ethernet Switching hit an all-time record high in 2Q18.

“The Data Center Ethernet Switch market hit a significant milestone in the market and 10 Gbps is no longer the dominant speed in terms of revenue,” said Alan Weckel, Founder and Technology Analyst at 650 Group.  “This is quite an accomplishment, something 40 Gbps could never achieve and is primarily driven by strong demand of Cloud providers throughout the world. DC Equipment CAPEX is growing at such a rapid pace that future records breaking when 400 Gbps starts shipping are likely.”

The report also indicates strong 25 Gbps native and 100 Gbps port shipments from Arista, Cisco, Dell, H3C, Huawei, and Juniper.

Additionally, 650 Group published its Merchant Silicon report that indicates record 25 Gbps SERDES shipments with the technology representing over half the lanes in Data Center switching for the first time.  The start of shipments based on 50 Gbps SERDES solutions also occurred during the quarter.  Quarterly reports on this subject include market share for Broadcom, the market leader, as well as emerging vendors, including Barefoot, Innovium, Marvell, Mellanox, and Nephos.

The Ethernet Switching report family, which includes several unique reports ranging from the overall market to Data Center, SMB, and Enterprise/Campus looks closely at the technology and speed transitions amongst the different markets within switching and for data center switching looks closely at vendor market positioning in the installed base and amongst unique vertical splits such as the Cloud, Telco SP, and enterprise space.

200 Gbps and 400 Gbps to have Material Impact on Ethernet Switch Market in 2018, According to 650 Group 800 Gbps to Ramp Early Next Decade

1/16/2018

Portola Valley, California – January 16, 2017 – A newly released market leading report by 650 Group indicates that 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 800 Gbps will all ship in the next five years resulting in robust growth for the Ethernet Switch Market.

“The first wave of 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps will hit the market in early 2018 as the Ethernet Switch market expands the number of port speeds just three years since the last major set of technology advances. Both 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps will emerge off of 50 Gbps SERDES technology announced in 2017,” said Alan Weckel, Founder and Technology Analyst at 650 Group.  “The rapid pace of innovation is led not only by impressive technology improvements, but by Software Defined Networks (SDN) which is enabling the Cloud to better utilize the compute and networking resources at their disposal.”

650 Group authored several forecast reports on the subject of 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps as well as 25 and 50 Gbps SERDES speeds.

Merchant Silicon looks at the transition in the market amongst silicon vendors and how the market will transition.  Quarterly reports on this subject include market share for Broadcom, the market leader, as well as emerging vendors like Barefoot, Cavium, Innovium, Mellanox, and Nephos.
